The Poppy Appeal allows The Royal British Legion to provided lifelong support for the Armed Forces community – serving men and women, veterans, and their families. We spend around £1.3 million pounds per week on providing a range of support such as, local accommodation for ex-armed forces, award winning care homes and Poppy Breaks.
In 2016 the Poppy Appeal in Sunderland raised over £100,000. However, due to the decrease in the number of volunteers this year it dropped to just over £70,000.
At the moment a small king-hearted team spends time delivering and collecting charity tins to local business and schools in Sunderland. The group also mans the collection stands in supermarkets, where most of the money is raised.
However, due to old age most of our volunteers are retiring and the organisers are desperately seeking more helpers. We don’t need loads of time from people, even if it is just for a few of hours that would be fantastic and it would make a big difference.
